Shanghai was the first stop on my journey through China, where my introduction to the country was both surreal and memorable. Upon arrival, I found myself in a nearly deserted airport, greeted by friendly personnel loudly reminding everyone, “no photos!” This moment perfectly captured the unique character of what was to come.
The city itself felt like a real-life “Tetris” game, with towering geometric structures that often seemed to defy gravity. Each building, whether modern or historic, contributed to Shanghai’s eclectic skyline, a striking blend of old-world charm and futuristic design. As I navigated the city’s vast urban landscape, I was struck by the sheer scale of it all. Despite walking what felt like endless distances, I would find that I had only covered a small area on my map.
My time in Shanghai offered me a glimpse into both an ancient civilization and a rapidly evolving modern society. The city’s streets are steeped in history, yet they pulse with the energy of a nation in constant motion. One particularly memorable detail was the confiscation of numerous lighters, a quirky yet common experience for travelers in China. Having heard many stories about this country, I was eager to experience it for myself, and I soon realized that in China, the line between legend and reality is indeed thin, making every moment a blend of both.
